Hillcrest Pool

Does anyone have any insider information on when the new Hillcrest pool will be open? I have called the parks department and I've been on the website and the woman on the phone couldn't help me and the website just says "Summer 2010" (which has been put back from the original open date of "Spring 2010").

Any ideas?

I work at the pool that HIllcrest is replacing (Percy Norman Pool, for anybody who's interested) and will be working at the new one when it opens, and you have no idea how many different opening dates we've gotten over the past year to tell the public. It was supposedly supposed to go for a trial run in the summer of 2009, but that didn't happen. Then we were told that it was going to be opening in the fall of 2009 and that didn't happen. They drained it for the Winter Olympics and after the Olympics were over they found several things that needed to be fixed (both structural and cosmetic). They pushed for late spring of 2010 but that didn't happen either.

The latest date they had given us was July 1st, which obviously, hasn't happened, but now they are 'for sure' opening it up on July 29th. Several of my coworkers have been moving over there though and doing work at the other pool, so July 29th seems to be the date that things will finally get rolling.

I know that we had pamphlets the last time I was in at Percy Norman (which was last week) that had information on the structure as well as it gave you a $2 swim if you held on to it and brought it back during the month of April. You can go in to Percy (which is right across the street from Hillcrest) and get a couple if you like!

Wow, I can't believe the first response was from someone who works at Percy Norman! What good luck. I live right by there so I'll stop by to pick up some of those $2 swim brochures!

Also, what's the state of the Percy Norman Pool? Is it a nice pool? Decent lane swimming?

Thanks so much!

Wow that was supposed to be the 'month of August' not April. Sorry about that!

And yes, lol, I do work there, have for two years now as an auxiliary cashier. Keep in mind that Percy's closed on the weekends during the summertime (which always was to promote the usage of the outdoor pool at Mount Pleasant which is now, unfortunately closed), so you'll have to stop by on a weekday. We're open from 6:15am-8:00pm Monday through Thursday and Friday we are open 6:15am to 5:00pm during the summer time.

Percy's not up to code anymore, particularly the Riley Park Ice Rink, but that'll remain for another year before they moved over 100 percent to the new facility. The pool itself is still quite nice, it's more or less brightly lit and has a diving tank as well as a 25 meter pool and a sauna and hot tub. The length swimming is good on the more off hours, as it can get a bit crowded, especially during lessons.

Currently they're offering lessons M-F from 10:00am-2:00pm I believe and Monday and Wednesday evenings. That's when the length swimming is down to one lane for the public and it gets squishy. Because it's the summer season I'm not sure if the Swim Clubs are all running but for sure the Vikings still rent out the pool space during specific times. This schedule here is your best bet and the most up to date. Quietest swimming times are usually in the morning before lessons, and I'm going to have to guess during the public swim in the evenings of Tuesday and Thursday is too. Two dollar swims on Friday are hit and miss with it being busy, sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. If you want to swim and you're curious as to how busy it is, just give the cashier a call and we'll happily go look out and see how busy it is for you (or at least I happily do it!)

The number is: 604-257-8680

Percy won't be running at the same time as the new pool as far as I know, so once Hillcrest opens, Percy Norman Pool will be shut down completely. In which case the schedule with change from the one mentioned above, as there is no way they're going to close the new place on the weekend. :)

You have no idea how many times I've had to explain the happenings of the new pool over and over to customers so I've got all this information stored in my head probably forever lol.

Thanks so much for your help!

While we're at it, is the climbing rock at Riley Park going to stay?
